Feed Manager



FeedManager is a software solution which aims to assist in the management of Livestock with emphasis on Cattle and feedlot management.

The system allows the farmer to manage all livestock individually. Livestock is managed from Purchase Consignments all the way to abattoir processed carcass.


The system allows the farmer to define his farm layout by naming the pens or places and then replicate this layout in the system. All feed mixing machines are also declared with all their characteristics i.e.: max volume that can be mixed and the direction in which the machine will deliver mixed feed.


The system utilises 3rd Party technologies to capture all information per individual livestock and therefor minimising manual data capturing.

The identification of individual livestock can be done electronically. This is achieved by making use of 3rd party equipment which interface with the system.

Feed Managment

Feed program

The system allows a farmer to define a calendar-based feed program. The feed program will consist of different Rations for different periods i.e. Started ration for the first 20 days, then Grower ration for 60 days and then finally on Finisher ration for 20 days. Once the Feed Program is assigned to a pen, the system will automatically switch to the new ration as time goes by.


Feed Sessions

The farmer can define multiple Feed Session per day i.e. a Morning session and an Afternoon session. He can further allocate a percentage of the daily ration to the different Feed sessions.

The system will allow the farmer to create a Feed-day to stretch across a calendar day i.e.: An Afternoon session, Evening session and then on the next day a Morning session.

Rations and Resources

The farmer defines Rations to be fed including the resources and the percentages to make up the ration. The order in which the resources should be mixed for the ration is also defined.

The system also allows for prioritising a ration so that it can later calculate the order in which feed deliveries should be calculated.

Feed mixing and delivery

The system will automatically calculate the amount of different rations to be delivered to all pens for each feed session. Thereafter, the system will generate a Feed Instruction which can then be loaded electronically onto the feed mixing machine.

In the case where multiple feed mixing/delivery machines are used the farmer can adjust the loads to optimise the usage of the machines.


The Feed Instruction will consist of a series of instructions indicating what and how much must be loaded into the mixer and then a series of instructions telling the operator how much must be delivered at which pen.


After completion of the Feed Instruction the information pertaining to the exact amount loaded and delivered can be returned to the system for accurate stock adjustment and accurate feed allocation to the individual livestock.

Growth Management

FeedManager allows the farmer to define a series of weigh-events through the life time of the livestock on the farm. These weigh-events can typically be (but not limited to):

  • Purchase consignment weight
  • Individual processed weight
  • Grower weight
  • Abattoir live weight

All weights are always recorded per individual livestock. This allows the system to calculate individual average daily gain (ADG) and also the feed conversion ratio (FCR).

Cost Management

All costs incurred during the life time of the livestock on the farm are stored per individual livestock.

Purchase price is initially calculated from the purchase consignment as an average of the total purchase price divided by the number of livestock on the purchase consignment. This is then later adjusted after the individual processing of the consignment to the actual cost based on the weight of each head in relation to the total consignment cost.

During the entire stay of the livestock on the farm, all costs pertaining to feed allocated, medicines administered are also allocated per individual livestock.

Daily overhead costs are also automatically allocated to the herd on an individual basis. These costs are typically:

  • Daily standing cost
  • Interest on capital
  • Mortality costs etc

 FeedManager interfaces with the abattoir by means of importing the slaughter sheet information electronically. Information from the abattoir include:

  • Live weight before slaughter
  • Carcass weight
  • Grade
  • Price per Kg
  • Dressing percentage (calculated)

All this information results in a comprehensive picture of the financial performance of an individual livestock.


Stud management

FeedManager includes a Stud Management module where the farmer can record the genetic history of a specific livestock.


Stock Control

Stock control consists of order processing, goods received and back orders. Furthermore, stock will be automatically adjusted as and when Feed Instructions are executed. The system will also warn the farmer of stock items below minimum stock level.


End-to-end Traceability

Traceability is a result of all the functions built into the system. Example: an abattoir slaughter sheet refers to a carcass serial number, which translates into a livestock id. Because the system records all livestock information regarding rations fed and medicines administered, a complete history of the livestock is available. This includes: the purchase consignment of which it was part and therefor the origin of the livestock.
